Are you hooking it to an IDE connector and not trying to use a floppy connector? Does your mobo's IDE controller support whatever slow transfer mode that thing uses (something like ATAPI PIO 1). According to the Imation page XP no longer supports the original 1X drive for the 120MB disks but should still work with ordinary floppy diskettes. Which actual drive do you have, the Mitsubishi or the Matsushita (Panasonic) - 1X or 2X? I'd also suggest not having any other drive on the cable and using a 40-wire cable. I hope it's not the parallel port external... Anyhoo, you can go on eBay and still find them - look for a 2X unit (only made by Matsushits but I forget the model no.). Or, click on the link in my sig. I have a combo floppy drive and flash card reader that is slick for sale there.

Here's some info I found: http://panasonic.co.jp/psec/en/down/

Another option might be to use a boot CD. Is the laptop capable of that?

it's working without other stuff running...don't know if it's WoW or something else....was able to make disks.

I may pull it and install a regular floppy. I only liked it because it's electronics (eject button). I use a floppy about once a year if that.
