XP pro can't find system file

My XP pro machine won't boot. It say it can't find WINDOW\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM. The file is still on the disk but it must be corrupt. Is there any way I can replace the file or does XP keep a backup of the file? What is in the file and is it machine specific or will any SYSTEM file do?

It does not help that the newer monitors won't display post information. I had to hook the machine up to an old CRT monitor to figure out why it was not booting.

I tried to do a repair from the XP disk and that does not seem to work either.

Somehow, I got it to work again. I scanned it and backed it up and when I put it back in it booted fine. I was about to do the repair install.
