xp pro black screen w/ mouse pointer at boot up

xp pro sp2
a7n8x-x mobo
PNY fx 5200 vid card

this is a fresh install not 2 weeks old and right after the windows loading screen when it should give me a user logon choice screen is totally black but my usb mouse works (only in 1 of 4 usb ports). The same thing happens when i try to enter safe mode, mouse works but other than it saying "Safe Mode" in each corner and the sp2 info at the top i get nothing. the only other strange thing that happens is when I go in the bios when i move over to the boot sequence tab it hange for about 10 seconds then fills the screen with the info. And for some reason I have never been able to boot from the cdrom, even if its my first choice.

Do you have a ps/2 mouse to try for an experiment? With the pc off, disconnect any and all usb peripherals. Then try booting up.

its just stops at that same spot, i don't know what to do

From the Safe Mode menu, try VGA mode. Also, you can try the "Last Known Good Configuration" option at the startup menu.
