XP Pro and XP Home Network Question

I have one PC running XP Pro. The other is running XP Home. The router is an SMC Barricade 7004VBR. My ISP is Comcast Cable.
I'm trying to connect the two to allow some file sharing. Each PC has it's own printer, so that isn't a concern.
I verified that both have the same workgroup, and they do. I go to My Network Places, then Entire Network, then Microsoft Windows Network. After a long pause the Workgroup icon appears. When I click on that, after an even longer pause I receive an error message that reads "Workgroup is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this resource. Contact the administratorof this server to find out if you have access permissions.
The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available."
What do I have setup incorrectly?

Thanks for the link, but I wasn't able to locate a solution over there. Still can't connect the two machines.

check to see if the Windows Firewall on either system is enabled for that Nic. If that is turned on it will block your networking. It's under Networking, View network connections. then right click on the connection and go to properties and the right tab and be sure Enable Windows Firewall is not checked.

Dennis, checked both PC's, and neither has the built in firewall enabled. I do have Zone Alarm on the XP Home box, but that is currently disabled.

make sure both are on the same network first (i.e. 192.168.0.10, 192.168.0.20) make sure your built-in xp firewall is disabled
you might also want to make sure that under your connection properties client for microsoft networks is installed and file and print sharingservice
Might also have to enable guest account??

sometimes Zonealarm goes nuts and even disabling it will not fix the problem. If nothing else helps try unistalling Zone Alarm completely. It's worked for many. Also run IPCONFIG from a command prompt on both systems and see what the IP is. they both should be on the same network and your SMC Router will assign them each an IP. Look for something like 192.168.0.2 say on one system and 192.168.0.3 on the other. The last numbers probably will be different than the examples I listed but should be different on each system. To allow the systems to talk on the network they IP Range has to be in Zonealarm or it will block all network communications between the 2 computers. The 192.168.0 part should be the same on both systems. It's the last number that should be different.

Hope the above makes sense. It's helped many in the past.

DT, you are part genius! Uninstalled ZA and the connection was made. Who'd a thunk it? I figured disabling it would suffice. Oh, well. You will be receiving vast amounts of money in the near future. Please provide me with your social security number, bank account and routing numbers, and date of birth. I'll take care of the rest.
Thanks......

I Do not want to be abnouxious but the page that did not help states:

"Some Software Firewalls, Live Virus Scanner etc., depending on how they set would keep working in the background even if you switch them Off.

Disable means that if possible do not let them to load at Startup take them out of the picture until the Network Settings, or problems are resolved".

:sun:

dude, im having the same problem. only im not using zonealarm, im using the computer associates one(which is basically the same). the programs are like EZ firewall and EZ antivirus. but yeah, yesterday, me and my dad transferred a bunch of files we wanted to put onto a new computer on the network, and put them in a folder under our Workgroup called Mshome. it worked fine yesterday, but now we cant get back into that workgroup anymore, same error message, and those files are really important too. ugh.

Welcome to TCP/IP network sharing. I think it was por Bleemo who asked why TCP/P gets a bad rap. It's this "now it works, tomorrow it doesn't" nonsense. Using NetBEUI stops this problem.

I am still wondering because I have two networks setup with WinXP Pro machines and TCP/IP and they have never given me a hiccup.

PorBleemo is one word by the way. 😉

How about we just setle on good old PB? Looks like your setup works for you, which is good, I (and others) haven't been so lucky. My problem was it was fine for a period of time and then no-go. This inconsistancy drove me nuts and why I like to pass on the NetBEUI solution.
