XP Pro and e trust EZ Anti Virus

I just installed XP Pro on a freshly formatted hard drive. All has gone smooth and well, and I've been pleasantly surprised at the OS and its performance. That is, until I installed the etrust EZ Anti Virus, from Computer Associates. Suddenly, there is a noticeable slow down whenever I try and open anything. Outlook Express, Internet Explorer, just about any other program or function.
Now, strangely, I don't even have the virus program running in the background. It's on a stand alone, home PC, so I run the program manually. Has anyone experienced anything similar? Is there a known issue here that I'm not aware of?

Yeah, I understand it's a resource hog. All virus programs are. I seem to have the problem corrected, though. By default, the program runs each time a file is opened or a program is started. This was probably the problem. After I discovered this, I unchecked the appropriate boxes so the program is now completely manual and dependent upon me. System performance is back up to par. Thank you for your reply.
