XP Pro and DOS Games don?t mix?

Please forgive me if this is old hat but I?d really like to play my old DOS games in XP with sound and mouse. I?ve tried compatibility mode and a bunch of other things with no success.

The only sound I get is with the Win95 version of Doom. But for some reason it won?t let me use my mouse.

Am I doomed in not being able to play DOOM again??

Please help.
 
No, NT based OS's(NT 3,x and 4.x, Win2K, and WinXP) and DOS games don't mix.

But for your Doom problem, try Doomsday, works very well, and includes things such as TCP/IP support for some nice multiplayer action 🙂

Flash, if you haven't tried it, go find some friend and play through Final Doom: Plutonia in cooperative mode.
A crapload of nonstop mayhem 😀
 
Tip for all DOS games in XP: Make a shortcut to the executable, go to the properties and tell it to use a set amount of memory. 8MB should suffice for most games, and will usually improve performance. As for sound problems, there must be some software around to emulate a Soundblaster 16?

Great programming never dies (id Software's). 🙂 You can play Doom with the Legacy mod made by some very cool dudes. It can enable OpenGL with light coronas and other neat little trinkets like wall decals. This also fixes the mouse problem thank God; the mouse is what makes that game really fun. I bought the Collector's Doom edition for $20 which consists of the first two games and final Doom but it's terrible. 🙁 No mouse support and the resolutions suck. It's only good for the .WADs. Legacy fixes everything. You copy all the .WADs to the Legacy folder and you can play all 4 games (Doom, Doom II, Plutonia and Eviluation <--Spelling) with the luxurious options that I explained above. It's a little hard to install but if you're a competent person with computers you shouldn't have a problem.

About the other problems, I don't know. The only old DOS games I can't play are Duke Nukem 3D and Blood. The sound crackles and Blood crashes a lot. 🙁
 
There is a good reason DOS programs do not work all that great in NT OSes.

DOS and the entire 16-bit subsystem that allows you to run Win3.1 programs is a emulator.

If DOS apps refuse to function correctly there really is not much you can do about it. The emulator isn't 100% perfect.


Some previously mentioned software to emulate a SB16 interface for DOS programs, well its called VDMSound. But be aware its not all that easy to configure, not all apps work with it, and it can be quite buggy sometimes. Link: http://ntvdm.cjb.net/
