XP Plug and Play problem

I installed the 27.20 detonators, and got a bunch of yellow flags in my device manager. In my usual non chalant way I uninstalled the devices that had the flags and rebooted, expecting windows to reinstall them all. Well, my dvd, sound card, video card got reinstalled, but i lost my Software Plug and Play Device Enumerator and it won't come back.

Now whenever I try to install my sound card drivers they say that the drivers are working, but I get a "No device" message when using winamp/wmp/whatever. Tried a few different drivers for my sound card. Even tried upgrading my via 4in1's to the latest release, even though XP has built in Via's...

Anyone know how to get this device back? I tried everything through the Add New Hardware section of the control panel and it just won't come back.

Rig is:
P4 1.8, Shuttle AV40R (not using raid), MSI GF3 822, Philips Acoustic Edge, Windows XP, now I have the via 4in1 4.37(final)... 23.11 det's (went back to those, the 27.20's wouldn't even get picked up by my device wizard after the problems) and 1.57 or 1.65 drivers for my Philips AE...

Any ideas?

does a yellow exclamation point appear next to the sound card in device manager? if not, you may have the wrong device selected for sound output - go to control panel-sounds and audio devices - audio - sound devices and select your sound card

No exclamation marks, but my playback device is greyed out in my audio device tab... same with recording, etc.

It appears to be working in Device Manager, but can't find it anywhere else.
