XP phoning home

Hi all!

Somebody already looked into what and when the XP final is phoning home?

I don't feel like installing it at home and haven't got time to take a closer look at this at work. It seems rather "talkative", for example I was rather surprised it tries connecting to msft.net just because some new peripheral showed up on the SCSI bus (and yes, that's before telling it to go look for a driver).

TIA!

you are just being paranoid.. .however if your copy is legal then you have nothing to worry about

Me i just installed psygate firewall before i turned on my cable modem and disallow anything that tries to goto Microsoft

I wont comment on the legality of my copy but as you see, they cant do shizznat if you blockem

It was probably one of these:

1. Automatic Updates
2. NTP time synchronization

Both involve connecting to an MS server.

If you're really that paronoid about big brother XP, use Win2000.

AFAIR I disabled both the time client and the auto updates.

It's really not paranoia, more curiosity. Problem is we have a lot to do right now, so I can't play with the XP box at work (never mind a packet sniffer). But from what I've seen MS will at least have a very good idea what software and hardware is running on and with XP. Let's hope they put that information to _good_ use.

BTW, I do run 2K at home - works very well. Thanks for the suggestion though.
