I took in a computer to repair, and they have a dsl modem hooked up through the usb port right now. Maybe we'll change that later. Anyways, I am trying to add a network card into the machine, and no matter what card I use, XP loses the ip address about every 5 seconds. The little network icon appears in the taskbar saying there's limited or no network connectivity, then immediately reaquires an ip address from the router on the other end of the cable. A repair install of XP did not fix it. This is the first time I'm seeing this symptom and have no clue what to try.

I'm sure I could set it to a static ip address, but I'd rather get the real problem solved now before I run into some new problems down the road.

sounds like there could be spyware or a virus on the system causing that, a fresh install of xp will fix that, but usually ad aware and spybot, a good antivirus will remove what ever crap caused this.

I eventually found what it was, sbc's 2wire software was causing the nic to loose the address. Never seen that before. Sometimes brute force trial & error gets the job done.
