XP Perflib_Perfdata_xxx.dat files

In Windows/Temp I get a few of these every time I boot. They are Perflib_Perfdata_xxx.dat files. Why do I get them and how can I stop it? Are they from an XP service that I can stop...like performance monitoring?

Also, is there a way to get rid of these files?
TIA

These are files created by the Performance Logs and Alerts service. If these files are really bothering you, you can disable the service.

Im on
win XP pro SP3

and i don't have anything in that folder after reboot.. but im positive its because of something i did during my initial setup.

I don't know what specificly does it, but if i were to take a guess, perhaps its this..
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927229

ctrl+F and search or scroll down to the download that says:
Extensible Performance Counter List (exctrlst.exe)

it doesn't install, simply runs. you can select every process it its list and uncheck the box one by one, that says something like "enable performance counters for this service"

The service you guys mentioned I still have enabled set to "Manual" and it doesnt creat that file.

...are you doing this because your trying to fix something? its a clean format? or your just trying to optimize your setup? ...cause i have a few tips if you need them for optimizing as much as possible, I don't use every tweak out there, but i have a few of the ones that make the most impact written down somewhere

Thank you. I will look. I want to do this as my system has gotten very slow. It is a 2.4 GHZ P4 but is overclocked to 3.3GHZ from day 1. Not sure just what is going on but I am trying to "decrapify" the system now.

...did you see those threads posted about win XP about some sorta issue some people have currently if you use windows updates set to automatic. Disabling auto updates fixes it. If you don't care about updates. I personally backup my system after a clean install, use safe online common sense along with a firewall and never update after installing SP3.

granted that maynot be your issue, and if its not easily identified just fyi.. maybe more worth while to reformat and clean install, because even with No tweaks at all winXP runs fast.

if you don't want to or cant reinstall atm... could post what you've already checked and attempted to fix, and i or other people can then make recommendations on what perhaps you may want to check

Well, I do NOT have auto updates on. I have thought of reinstalling. I had a raid1 setup and 1 drive failed. I have been running on a 1 drive raid1 for a few years now as I do not want to buy another 1st gen 250GB sata drive. My disk I/O seems slow and wonder if there is any overhead in a "failed" raid 1 setup. I was going to turn it into non-raid, but I believe the ONLY way to do that is to reinstall. I have images, but I believe restoring the image would make XP look for raid drivers again!
