XP over 2K

I have just installed Windows XP over 2000 and most functions seem to be fine. However, I wonder if I would be better off if I had performed a new installation without the base 2000 being present.
I am concious of the fact that there may be out-dated drivers etc. lying around which have been superceeded by XP's taking up disk space. I have Medal of Honour and had to install XP drivers for my nVidia GeForce2 GTS display card before it would work. That must mean that my previous drivers are no longer used so I guess that they could be removed?
Any advice would be useful.

Although it is always recommended to do a clean install, I doubt it will hurt in your case. I wouldn't worry all too much about deleting old drivers. Unless of course you know exactly what to remove.

I know a lot of XP users that would disagree with you on that,it`s rock stable for me.

Btw 6 months now with WinXP and it has been excellent for me,I also do a lot of gaming as well.

Getting back on topic a clean install is always best but if it`s working fine for you I would not bother doing a clean install.

I use Ontrack SystemSuite V4 with my WinXP,it cleans out the registry like old invalid registry files etc and keeps it in tip top condition,excellent product IMHO.

Clean install's always better than dirty, and XP has been working fine with me. If you can get Win2k to work fine, it's most likely that XP will just as fine.

The only major differeces is the UI and initial user friendler / dumbed down, but scratch an inch beneath the surface and you'll find ol Win2k again.

This is the second flame bait thread I've seen you start or jump into, your going to be quiet the pleasure here That said, your statement 'XP under any circumstance is unstable' is completely false. Your earlier comments about 2k vs XP shows a complete lack of understanding of the OS evolution. You may prefer Win2k, great, run it for as long as you can (eventually you'll need to upgrade, there is new functionality that will only be available to Xp and Xp successor OS's, just like 95 and 98 are similar but many apps require 98 to install).

(Sorry, I'll take it). I run XP on 8 machines here at the house (2K on a couple others, and NT4 on one OLD laptop). I ran XP from the first beta thru about every build to the current release. The XP and 2K cores are the same, there is more 'fluff' added to XP. I have plenty of hardware (and mix of hw). XP is as reliable as 2K was. You might be having trouble, but from your posts, it's hard to debug why as you don't really offer any issues (just complaints).

Not sure why I have hung onto using it.

I am seriously thinking of backing up my stuff and reinstalling Win 2k. I run XP without the eyecandy anyway. Maybe it will be better for me if Microshaft ever puts out a Service pack or something

Until then I am 2k bound again

Unstable is such a broad word... how was it unstable. Most of the time its not even the operating system that is installed, it is the hardware drivers. I am sure you know that. While XP is basically a tweaked version of 2000, why is it that some 2000 drivers make a XP install unstable. Well from what people tell me is that the "Fast User switching" feature is one of the reasons.

So I must ask... does all your hardware have non-beta, but XP compliant drivers installed? Also if the system is build by yourself.. it could be that hardware conflict... most likely on fault of a driver... for example.. the video driver has some issues with your sound card...

Now you can go out and blame XP for its unstability and that MS is horrible and the source of all evil... but before bringing out such accusations... check your hardware & its accompanying software.

I personally have upgraded every computer in my household to XP now, except for on the systems that can't absolutely handle it.

BTW... my problem in the beginning with XP was (especially when I was testing it)... the ever changing UI... but now you can set it back to the Windows 2000 style... so no excuse there.

Go to System Properties, Advanced Tab, Startup and Recover Settings, and uncheck Automaticall Restart box.

To combat the infamouse BSOD, XP just reboots instead of giving you the stop code.

Either way there should be an event log entry with the stop code.
