XP or Vista for Video Editing/Rendering

Hello Ladies and Gents, I'm looking for a little advice regarding the system I'd like to put together.

I need to build a system capable of smoothly editing and quickly rendering video, but I'll also be using the system for recording and mixing audio.

I understand XP only supports 3GB of ram, but it has greater compatibility with my audio software, and I already own a copy.

If i have a budget of $1200USD before taxes, how would you recommend I spend it?

Thanks in advance!

Vista X64. Then you can see all of your 4GB of RAM, and have the option of 8GB. More and more programs are going to be developed for Vista, too.

Edit: if you want suggestions for all your componenets, do us a favour and fill in the sticky.
