XP or Tbird/Duron + RAM?

Well, windows burned my processor (nice job microsoft :disgust: never really liked them, but I can't do most of teh stuff I want to without their OS so whatever).

Anyways, I'm on a strict budget. I can either afford another XP 1700+ or I was thinking of getting a cheaper Duron 1.2/1.3 or the Tbird 1.1 and anotehr 128Mb of RAM. I'm thinking of the latter as I could really use the RAM, but which processor runs the coolest out of those three?--I need a cool-running processor.

Athlox XP definately is your better choice, Tbird is so old its not even funny.

it really depends on how much ram you have now... i like to be a ram whore, so i insist on 512MB at bare minimum, especially with games like battlefield 1942 and simcity 4. if you've only got 128MB or less (eek..), i'd say go with the cheap processor and ram. the way i figure it, if you're aware that you need more ram, you probably need it worse than you think. also, if you're computer use is limited to business applications and multimedia isn't too high on the priority list, the extra speed that the XP offers over a duron or older tbird won't matter much. it all boils down to what you have now, adn what your use includes...

Yeah, I been noticing some slowdowns and have attributed it to the RAM (only got 128Mb DDR). Think I'll pick up another stick of 128Mb and a Duron/Tbird. Which one runs cooler, anyone know?

I've heard M$ accused of alot of things but never of burning up a CPU. I'd further investigate the reason why you're cpu burned up before replacing it or adding RAM.

Is your PS AMD approved and working properly within specs?
Is your mobo perhaps flaking out and killed the CPU?
Is your HSF working properly and adequately sized for the CPU you intend to use?
Do you have adequate case ventilation?

If all the above are satisfactory I'd go with a XP1700+ tbred B now (about $50) and keep your eyes open for a hot deal on RAM as the prices continue to fall.

There is no reason to investigate further as I know this is the reason. I turned off my computer before I went to bed, but it never actually turned off, it got stuck on the shut down screen just idling there. I've seen this happend before, but never has it happened to me... or at least it rarely does. Anyways, when I wake up my mom said she heard my comp running when she woke up (which aint that hard, my comp is quite loud ), when i got down there it was off, and the processor burned. THUSLY, one can conclude, Microsoft burned my processor.

RAM! If you saw how bad my computer was when I'm working (3d design/animation, graphic design, bunch of stuff open at once), you'd want (no need) more RAM.

So... which runs cooler, Duron or Tbird?

Durons run cooler than tbirds.

I still don't see how MS burned your computer. Even if it were spiked at 100% usage overnight, a properly cooled cpu shouldn't burn up. Do you see burn marks on the cpu? Can you try it in another computer?

Your CPU shouldn't have burnt up from idling at the shutdown screen, as beatle suggested I think you need to look at other possible culprits as to why you couldn't restart your system, or if the processor is fried look into a better cooling solution.

Anyway, here's the numbers from AMD spec sheets for power consumption of the top end Durons and a couple Athlons:

Processor, Rated Voltage, Thermal Power Typical/Max

Duron 1200 @1.75v = 50W/55W
Duron 1300 @1.75v = 55W/60W
XP1700+ (Palomino @1.75v = 57W/64W) Tbred @1.6v = 45W/50W
XP2100+ (Palomino @1.75v = 64W/72W) Tbred @1.6v = 56W/62W

As you can see, a Duron 1200 will run cooler than a Palomino but hotter than a Tbred "B" XP1700+ at 1467MHz

To say that an OPERATING SYSTEM burned up your processor automatically puts you in noob territory. And you aren't migrating anytime soon.

if you do use graphics apps, a tbird would be a good idea
you could always undervolt it

also, i too dont think idling (or 100% usage, i dont know what state the cpu is in while shutting down...my gues would be at least 50-100%...) a cpu overnight in the shutdown phase would burn it out.....its pretty much just like running it all day (and cpus can do that for years)

Yes, but my cooling is very inneficient. My fans have shut down for no apparent reason while I'm running my computer and I'll have to turn off my computer quickly before the temps rise too fast. This is why I need a cool running CPU. I have a very nice HS that should keep it cool if the fan shuts down again (me also needs a new mobo--wish I had more money )

Well, good luck with your new cpu since it won't last too long with the current fan you have. Please listen to the people that have posted above. You're NOT addressing the root of the problem. Spend the extra $10~$15 on a properly working fan and you'll not blame Windows for burning up your cpu.

Sounds like you need a Via C3 cpu. Slow, but cool running. You need some fans.

Why won't it? I'm getting a new fan for it, I just need a new processor to use.

And it is the OS. I dun get what you guys dun understand. Sure my CPU cooling sucks, but had windows shut down properly this would have never happened.

Plus, it's fun to blame someone else for burning my processor. I've burned 3 processors by overclocking too much. First was a Celery which was overclocked 110%. I had a huge box fan blowing air into the case. Second was a Tbird. I made a program that slowly overclokcs while stress testing. It was supposed to stop overlcocking when it got too hot or showed artifacts/errors. That never happened. haha, oops. Third was OC'd too much and burned on a nice hot summer day.

I have 2 case fans and a PCI slot fan. My cooling is fine, it's just the CPU cooling, which is being replaced.

Since you like to overclock why would you spend $35 on a Duron 1200 that might do 1500Mhz when for $15 more you can get a T'bred XP1700+ that should hit 2Ghz?
