XP or 7

my spare machine is getting an upgrade from a turion64 to a E6320 C2D. THe s754 mobo keeps dropping SATA ports and is becoming unusable

the XP install is old balls anyways, but I still have 2 or 3 legitimate XP keys laying around, from when I bought a 7 pack a year or so ago.

functions are:
  • file shares
  • bittorrent
  • IIS webserver
  • has a mysql db and runs rflow to log router traffic
  • runs syslog
  • I run a dedicated BF2 server on it that a few friends connect into on occasion for COOP
  • googletalk for my spare gmail account, although I may stop using it on my main machine nad just use it on this one anyways
  • I use inputdirector to control it from my main PC seamlessly.
  • I rip my wii games with this machine as a backup incase I ruin/lose a disk with wbfs manager
the main plus for a w7 upgrade is 64 bit comuting I suppose, not that i need it most of what this does.

anyone have any issues running any of the minor crap it does now, in W7?

As you aren't gaming on this or likely running more than 4gb ram, I'd use the legit copy of XP rather than spend the $ on 7 for these purposes.

Win7 is great, but for something that you'll spend apparently little time sitting in front of, why pay for it there?

thats a solid point. It may get 8gb of RAM, only because I might toss ddr2 1066 in my main rig and Ill have 8 gb of ddr2 800 to use for it I guess. as of now Im just going to split the 8 I have between both, since the 4gb to 8gb jump doesnt do much for me anyways

I wont be doing much gaming, as it will probably have a lower level GPU and I have a 4850X2.

My main machine is on vista business. I know I have some issues with them interacting correctly all the time, I know vista and 7 dont alwyas get along either right>?

XP Professional x32 comes with IIS 5.1 (a special version just for XP). I don't think you can install IIS 6 on XP x32. IIS 6 does come standard on x64 XP.

Gotta love how MS managed to tie a web server of all things to an OS so that you can't upgrade it without completely changing OSes.

Yeah, I got very upset when I found out that I can not fit my Ferrari with a Snow Shovel in the winter.

Win XP is a client OS, need to run a serious server, use professional tools with the right Server OS/Application. Do not beed a serious work just like to play around, be happy that there is some thing available as is.

In addition there is countless amount of nice freeware Server that run on all versions of windows and available to whoever invest minimum energy to look for them.

If you have a spare 7 key, use it, if you have a spare XP key, use it. Basically, I would use whatever version of windows I currently own on a simple server like that, there is no point in getting a more advanced version of windows when XP will do everything you need it for.

As for the ram argument, well, are you really going to be doing ram intensive things on that computer? 8gb only benefits you if you are doing things that need 8gb.

Um, really? Car analogies are bad in general, but this one is so completely off-base it makes all other car/computer analogies look appropriate.

And really if you really wanted, you could indeed strap a plow on the front of a Ferrari. You would also probably want a lift kit and chains for the tires, but it would be doable. Which isn't true for Windows and IIS.

XP as a client OS needs to be used by developers and administrators that like to do things in test setups before doing them in production environments. Because of the stupid way MS puts artificial limitations on things like this those people are either forced to pay for Server and run that on their desktop or in a VM.

And it's not even so much an XP vs Server thing, it's a "there's no f'ing reason that a web server should be tied to a single OS release" thing. You can't install IIS7 on Win2K3 or IIS6 on Win2K8. You're forced to use the version that MS deemed appropriate to that version of Windows for absolutely no good reason.

And none of them are IIS which is kind of a requirement if you're doing any kind of work with .Net applications. There's absolutely no way that you can make MS' artificial limitations on their software sound like a good thing.
