XP now thinks I am connecting to the Internet through another PC...why?

Ok I have a d-link 604 router and when I first plugged it in between the PC and the cable modem everything was just like it was (except I could plug in other PCs, talk to my Xbox, etc.)

However after I upgraded my firmware on the router I now get a message when I boot my PC about how the "Internet Connection Sharing is ready" and I have two "network" icons in my system tray.

If I delete the whole connection and reinstall the XP Pro wizzard insists that I am actually connecting to the Internet through another PC!

My questions are as follows.

1. am I getting a slower connection to the outside? In the old way the "network" icon always said connected at 100 Mbps, but this new one says connected at 10 Mbps. Am I actually losing speed, or was is always going at 10 Mbps due to how fast a cable modem is?

2. Was this a router firmware change (so that my PC thinks it is actually connecting to the Internet through another PC), or was it some XP patch?

3. Is this how routers are suposed to work, or is this actually odd?

Thanks
