not sure if this should go into the software forum or here...

need some help w/ my writer. it's a generic brand (not sure of name) but it was working fine w/ XP. i ran into some OS problems and just did a clean install of XP. the system can see the cd drive and it works fine as a reader but Nero 5.5 doesn't recognize it as any cd drive. i believe the writer came w/ software from NTI but i think that it's just writing software.

i know this isn't much info but anyone have any idea what to do from here?

thanks,
Deo

Is it listed as a burner in the device manager?
Can you use XP built in burning software (crap) on it?
Have you got the latest patch(es) for Nero and whatever else you've been trying to use it with?

Are you running the lastest version of Nero? Nero won't work with drives it doesn't recognize. You need a version of Nero that knows your drive.

Check if DMA is enabled for it, in the device manager enable it for the primary/secondary IDE channel, whichever it may be on. Also, make it master if it's slaved.

I don't know what kind of burner you have but I have a generic one too which has NTI software so maybe it is the same.

Anyway I have had fits with getting it to work at times. For a long time XP wouldn't write to it but Nero and clonecd would. Then I installed some Acoustica's MP3 burner and nothing would work. A clean install of XP worked for me and now Nero, and clone cd work but it is touch sometimes.

What I would suggest as things that helped.

1. re-install the NTI drivers even when nothing else would work theirs would. Perhaps it is becuase they actually know what kind of drive it is! Anyway it isn't great burning software but it gets the job done.

2. get the latest version of Nero. I finally got one that works for me (latest version).

3. reinstall - as a last resort this has worked for me.

Good luck

Bingo - Some Nero versions are CD-Burner specific.
