After lots of fiddling, I can finely see files on my secondary PC (has win98). They are in

a folder called "My Network Places". But, when I look on my secondary PC, I can't see any

files located on my Primary (XP) PC. I installed to files the network wizard had me make

for my remote PC. But it didn't create an equivillant folder. Could it be that the XP

firewall is causing this? Any other ideas? Thanks in advance. Ron

On the win98 machine you have to check off the share files and folders option, then go to the drive and/or folders you wish to share and then enable the sharing under properties. Then from the WinXP system you must map to the drive/folder.

The same must be done on the WinXP box to share a folder or drive with win98.

for help try : practicallynetworked

I know turning off the xp firewall is probably a pretty basic thing. I recall seeing it as an option during my install but now I can't find the option. And help is no help. Where is it? Thanks again. Ron

Note - I think this is it cause I've done all the sharing settings.

<< You have to turn off the firewall in XP >>

the firewall in XP doesnt apply to your LAN connection

<< Windows 98 can't read NTFS >>

it doesnt have to, it isnt directly accessing the file system -- the host computer reads from the hdd and sends to the client... file systems dont make a difference

i posted yesterday to some guy explaining the fool-proof way to access shares, let me pull up the link and ill get back to you

I am pretty sure Windows 98 should be able to read NTFS networked drives... goes along with the idea of encapsulation (in application roughly: the idea that the file system should be irrelevant to another task "encapsulated" within file sharing).

I COULD BE WRONG. If so, please someone correct me :).

I GOT IT!!
Thanks for your advice and patience. As I might have guessed, it was simple. I was not logging on to the network from my 98 pc. I had the network (partially) working before I reformatted and reinstalled xp on my first pc. I did not need to log on when I booted my 2nd (98) pc. So I was just canceling that window at startup. I have gotten that annoying thing at work before and always cancelled till I would finally go in and correct it by syncronizing my password. So, out of habit, I was doing it here.

I still need to do some additional but it appears that the NTFS disconnect some of you caution against is not correct. I installed using the NTFS with this install and I appear to be able to go both ways with my 98 pc. I had also suspected that to be the possible problem.

Anyway, thanks for all your help - sometimes you just need to read the messages windows puts in front of your face and not blow them off. Lesson learned (again).
