XP network status in packets, not bytes?

This is a questions I've had for a long time but never bothered getting the answer to until now:

How do you choose whether the network connection status windows show how much you've sent and received in bytes or in packets. It seems like every computer I've ever been on shows it in packets, but I was looking at my brother's computer and his shows it in bytes, even though we're both connected to networks (so it's not like his is a modem or anything). He uses 2000, by the way, although when I used 2000 it still showed up in packets.

Anyone know if there is an option to switch this, or have another explanation as to why his might be different?
