ok. i've got 2 computers (1 xp home, 1 xp pro) on a network and even after running the "network setup wizard" on each machine multiple times and simultaneous restarts while praying to the computer gods...they have yet to find eachother.
im using a Siemens SpeedStream 2624 Router/WAP. Both computers are connected using 10/100 cat5 and the internet works great on each, but they cannot see eachother to share files/printers.
any clues?

then forget the buggy wizard and configure it manually. or better yet, if you have a router, set to be a dhcp server and configure both your pc's to obtain thier ip's through dhcp.

Any wizards (or "Miracle" utilities) concerning Network might work once when you first configure the Network. Any further use of the Wizard can trash the Network since it changes back settings that was build in time by applications and hardware installation. The time that might be saved by using the wizard, get wasted many times over when trying to correct the mess later on.

In other words, learning how to configure manually takes more time at the beginning, but saves much more time down the line.

Log to the following page.

Scroll down, in the middle (yellow hi-lited) you will find info, and links to solve sharing (Aka computers do not see each other) problems.

Link: Basic Networking.

have both pcs using the same workgroup id?
even if other stuff isnt set right, they should be able to see each other on the network if they have the same group id

hell, i set up debian on a system the other day and it/windows can "see" each other on the network immediately.

check control panel - system - computer name - you can see/change the workgroup name there; make sure they match exactly
