"XP Mode" on Win 7 Good For Gaming?......

Does "XP COMPATIBILITY" of the Win 7 Pro version give you benefits for gaming?

I hear it's a stripped down version of XP (no Directx) made specifically for some proprietary corporate software.....

If that's the case, then I guess the Home version of Win7 is best and just set up your system for dual-boot with XP, correct?...........

It's a seamless virtual machine i.e. Virtual PC that runs in the background, so I imagine it won't be good for gaming.

And you can't play those games under Win7 because...? :)

XP-M will be mostly for legacy software, it was never intended for gaming (as far as I know) so I'm pretty sure you won't be able to run games under it.

Games I have are Win98 or XP. So I imagine they won't work straight with Win7....yes?...

They will work fine.
The only thing that may not work are 16 bit games, which are really old games, think win95 or before.

The XP mode is going to be nothing other than an integrated virtual machine as far as I understand. Currently, there is NO DirectX possible inside virtual machines. (VirtualBox is working on it.) So in all likelyhood it will not be possible to game AT ALL (anything directx) in XP mode.

Vmware Workstation has directx support

Vmware Workstation has directx support

According to wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V...tion#Hardware_support)

VMware Workstation version 5.5 provided only experimental support for 3D hardware acceleration, via Microsoft's Direct3D 8 API.[12][13] A video has appeared on YouTube that demonstrates several 3D-accelerated games running under VMware Fusion and Mac OS X. The release notes for Fusion beta 2 include a list of 3D-accelerated computer games that can run within Windows XP-based virtual machines. In version 6.5, Direct3D 9.0 API support (only up to Shader Model 2.0) is provided on Windows 2000 and Windows XP guests (although not Windows 9x) and on any host OS. Its 3D performance is roughly equivalent to GeForce 6600/7300LE, running Crysis at 14-18 fps at low settings. Windows Display Driver Model support is not available as of version 6.5, therefore Windows Aero is not available in virtualized Windows Vista and later Windows guests.

I wouldn't expect to play modern games on it.

I run many DX games under VMWare Workstation - Not just because of incompatibilities, but because it doesn't monopolize my system. (I can type this, and have a game under XP in the corner).

It's called windowed mode ;) Most of current and old games have it ;)

Why would you want to run XP in a VM today is beyond me - obviously not counting incompatibility issues (which happen). But for gaming? And home use? Unless you want to fool around with VMs, but that's basically it.

I downloaded VMware Workstation trial to try this out because I didn't think this was even possible. Well, DX9 applications do indeed work in the VM, but only up to SM2.0. I also did some performance testing and it seems that there is about an 80% performance hit from running in the VM compared to my normal system.

So all-in-all, it's nice that DX9 works inside the VM, but I certainly would NOT use it as a gaming platform on a regular basis.

XP mode won't support 3d acceleration.
Virtualbox however is free, supports any OS you want to install in it, and now does support 3d. Primarily opengl, but there's some directx support too.

I can barely run a youtube video in my XP-M on Windows 7 box. Quad core 3.0ghz, 4gb ram, raptor, 260gtx core 216. I would really doubt you can play games through it.

Sounds like I'll be running a dual boot XP/Windows 7 Professional machine come October then.

I'm running a dual boot machine right now but I hardly ever use XP now that I added a SD reader drive in my bay that connects to my MOBO. In the past I mainly used it to transfer photos and a few other functions that were incompatible with Vista 64 bit Home Premium.
I'll keep XP boot for backup/emergency purposes.
