I'm moving my CD collection to WMA. I'm not sure if the Media Player ripper came with XP or if it's with the Plus! pack, but this thing is cool! With the press of a button, it gets all the CD info, makes an artist folder, makes a CD title sub folder, copys all the songs with the id tag info, plus puts album cover art and liner jacket info into the folder. Just put the CD in and press the Start Copy button...nice job Microsoft!

Yes I have...you ever see the adware that crap puts on your machine? Anyway, I was just suprised that MS did such a good job with their ripper....its build into XP, it'll record wma's up to 192kbps, and it's one click access.

and then you have to wonder why MS spends the development money to put this "feature" into their OS (they're technically tying another program to it, but apparently MS can't be tried for that).

Why bother with 192 kbps? Don't you know that WMA8 offers CD quality at 64kbps?

Wrong. It's not CD quality. Just because they say it doesn't make it true. I was just listening to the Travis Tritt samples on the WMA site you linked. I can tell the difference, even on my crappy computer speakers. In the original wave, I can hear "more," for example, I can clearly hear his fingers running over the guitar strings, and know for sure that's what I'm hearing. WMA seems to do away with the "swishy" sounds you would experience in a 64kbps MP3, but the WMA at 64kbps still comes up short.

I have a new player in my car that plays WMA files, so I might experiment some more with them (at higher bitrates than 64kbps). Unfortunately, my player doesn't support ID3 tags on WMAs, while it does for MP3s, so LAME-encoded MP3s will probably continue to be my format of choice for some time to come.

Ahem. Yes, I'm very much aware of that. The comment was meant to be very sarcastic (hence the

CDex is great!

I have yet to try Exact Audio Copy though, probably because I like CDex just fine. I've been using it for several years now.

if i was a company rolling out windows to my workstations i sure as hell wouldn't want it in there. but they don't even give you that option.

That's debateable. I don't think they sound as good as 160kpbs mp3s.

Huh? Yes they do. You have to install the Plus! pack to get this feature.

You mean 192 kbps WMA8 doesn't sound as good as LAME --alt-preset (cbr) 160 MP3? Yes, I'll have to agree with that. :D

If you like the functionality in Media Player for WMAs, buy the $9.99 MP3 add-on and you will go crazy. The add-on uses the FRAUNHOFER Technology for encoding MP3s and you can go all the way up to 320 BitRate. Others will tell you that LAME and all that is better, but I can't hear the difference and Media Player's One-Click interface will blow away anything EAC has to offer.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't there a discussion a long time ago about being able to turn on MP3 support via registry editing, i.e. MP3 encoding without needing to actually buy the MP3 add-on?

I'll have to agree eac isn't really for the masses... many many ppl forget to do the drive test thing.

CDex however, is a bit closer to it. Once set up, you can do a one click to mp3, id3 info, directory structure.... only thing you don't get is the album cover stuff. Not like that is all that important (at least for me).

Lame > WM8 :p

How is EAC hard to use? I put the CD in, it gets the track information, i click MP3, and it spits out MP3s.
