XP Media Center Edition

Got a bit of a problem with the media center versionn of XP: the machine can play DVDs no problem with WinDVD and even in windows media player, however, when I fire up the media center and tell it to play a DVD, the screen simply goes blank: it doesn't even get to the title page of the DVD. I've tried all the settings and they appear to all be the same as in media player.

Any ideas?
