xp media center 2005

This one has me really baffled. I purchased Media Center XP 2005 at a computer show. It's an OEM package. The set of disks is different than XP Professional. There are 2 installation disks and another which has updates for the 2005 version. The problem I'm having is that when I install, I reach a point where they ask for SP 2. I put in the updates disk and then I get a message that "i386" is missing. I have tried everything short of pulling my hair out. I don't want to do that because it's getting kind of thin up there. I called the dealer I purchased from, and they were no help, except they offered to exchange the disk set for a new one. Well, they did that and guess what, same problem. If I cancel installing the service pack it appears like it is installing the rest of Windows XP but it's not. It will boot up into Windows and I can enter into the Media Center portion of the operating system, but there is no Internet Explorer or other things which you would usually expect to see. I can't install any other programs. I thought maybe I'd try installing Firefox and download the updates that way but it was no go. It won't install anything. I've tried installing this on 2 separate computers. One has an AMD Sempron and the other has an AMD 64. Both are using Epox mother boards, which work very well with XP Professional. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

When it says "SP2" it means CD1, sp2 is integrated with the install, so its on CD1, theres not much on CD2

I know about that. Unfortunately, Microsoft does not give installation instructions with OEM operating system. Evidently, the installation proceedure for Media Center is quite different compared to XP Professional. I'm going to act on some other information I ran across and will let you know if I'm successful.

Thanks

As the others said, you start with Disc 1, insert disc 2, then REINSERT DISC 1 when asked for the SP2 disc, not the update disc you were given.

You were right. It would have been nice if microsoft had let me know that SP1 was on the installation disk 1. The thing that really through me for a loop was the 3rd disk they included with fixes for Media Center 2005. I thought this was the disk they wanted me to insert. I guess with all my knowledge, sometimes you just need to go back to the basics and not try to make something more complicated than it really is.

Thank you for your help.

You were right. I just made things too complicated. The thing that through me off was the 3rd disk they included that has fixes for Media Center 2005. Just have to stick with the basics.

Thanks for your help. I've got it up and running!

Glad to hear you got it. Don't worry, you're not alone, this is the most common problem with MCE installations. It really could be better labelled, but it's not really meant for end-user installs.
