XP Mean Virus ?

It appears there is a virus on this XP PC . It will restart in the middle of things . The NOD AV cant finish . The Super Anti Spyware also can't finish . Both cause a restart . Running Word gets message that Windows is illegal . Safe Mode doesn't help . This started about 2 weeks ago . Tried searching the Norton Virus list for some such virus - but there are so many - very difficult . I don't think there is any hardware problem . Can anyone suggest anything ?

you could also try the online scanners at Kaspersky, and Trendmicro I recommend in safe mode w/networking. also there is the Windows One Care on line scanner.

OK . Using online scanners didn't help . Also ran WDC disk diagnostic and also OK . Even diskcleanup causes a restart . I suspect there may be some corrupted system files . Can anyone reccomend a reliable repair utility ?

You booted off of a bootable CD and it restarted? Sounds more like a hardware problem such as memory in that case.
