XP MCE problem - no internet connection, no driver install, etc. - please diagnose!

I found this post (below) on another forum and it is EXACTLY the problem I am facing... if anybody has answers please help.

I built a new PC and bought Windows XP Media Center Edition as my OS. I'll skip the part about how I finally got it to load properly after trying for 2 days. PROBLEM 1) Once I got it loaded, I had trouble installing certain drivers and other peripheral software. At first I would get an error message saying the computer did not have 'Windows Installer'. After some searching around I found that in order to get 'Windows Installer' to work I have to go in to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Component Services and then scroll down to 'Windows Installer' and under 'start up type' change it from 'Manual' to Automatic' and then hit the "start the service' option at the top of the page. This allowed me to install some more of the 3rd party software I want to add, but not all of it. I have to do this each time I start the computer. PROBLEM 2) On some other 3rd party software, like for a DVD player, Lynksys wireless network adapter software and other stuff, The InstallShield Wizard pops up and then I get a "Setup failed to launch installation engine: The RCP server is unavailable". I don't know where to begin to look for the RCP server! PROBLEM 3) -are you still with me?- When I click the green 'Start' button on the taskbar, the menu comes up and at the top left column where it says 'Internet', there is no IE icon and when I click on it, the "Open with..." screen appears. When I click that closed, one more screen appears that says "The item you selected is unavailable. It might have been moved, renamed or removed. Do you want to remove it from the list?" Of course I click 'no'. When I click on the E-mail icon below that one, The 'Internet Properties' screen comes up. No email program And finally PROBLEM 4) I cannot get the PC to connect, even directly, to my cable modem. I can't find the menu option that will allow me to connect. I think there are too many things messed up here and maybe it's just bad installation discs. I would like some feedback before I send them back and am told that they're fine. Can anyone help? Please!!?!!?

Well, the part that the OP skipped ("I finally got it to load properly after trying for 2 days") is probably where the root of all these problems lie.

I would reinstall Windows. The installation should be a smooth and simple process. If it is not, let's diagnose that problem before we figure out what is wrong with the Windows installation.

I reinstalled windows (both upgrad and new install) it several times but still can't get all of the components to load. One more thing, during the install process, it keeps asking for the SP2 CD but I don't have one. I only have the 2 CDs that MCE is recorded on. What do you suggest I try next?

I'm pretty sure that when it prompts for the SP2 CD, you are supposed to insert disc one.
