XP MCE install issues

Installing XP Media Center Edition version 2005 on a "new" build (long story).

OS comes with three cds: disc 1 and 2 of the "original" 2005 version and a third disc labeled "Updates for version 2005"

The install goes fine through disc 1 & 2. Then the installer asks me to insert a disc with SP2 updates and to choose the source. It prompts me with D:/i386. I put in the update disc and nothing happens. Oh well, I try canceling out and the install proceeds without another hitch. Come to find out later, I don't have internet explorer installed. Hard(er) to get updates without IE, but I try.

I tried installing XP SP2 (KB835935) with a flash drive. No problems during install, but still no IE. I peeked into the update CD and it only contains an old self-extracting update specific to XP MCE from August 2005 (KB900325) so even if this has the right files within it, the installer can't get to them. I know MS rolled up newer updates in a file with the same name as of October 2006.

So what I'm here to find out is 1) which update should i use during the installation process; 2) how do I get/extract those files in the form the installer wants; and 3) can I use my flash drive instead of a CD since I have no convenient access to a burner (stupid netbooks). Anything else you need to know I will answer fairly quickly as I'm hoping to get this done today. Any other comments, welcome. Thanks.

OK, some more information. The installer is specifically asking "Please insert the Compact disc labeled 'Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 CD' into your CD-ROM drive (D:) and then clikc OK. You can also clink OK if you want filed to be compied from an alteante location, such as floppy disk."

So how do I extract the files from the self executing download I get from Windows (KB835935)? Are they available from MS in an unpackaged form?

As it turns out...

Googling the text of the prompt found me the answer. Because MCE 2005 is built off of SP2, the disk 1 and 2 have all of SP2 in it. The files wanted by installer are back in disk 1. So, install order is disk 1, disk 2, disk 1 again, then the rollup updates on the third disk while in windows. Sheesh.
