XP making HDD's set to PIO mode

i have finally found the problem to my suddenly degrading XP system, after a few days after a fresh install.

i dunno, but maybe htis has been answered ,but how can u change the settings of the transfer mode set my WinXP??

i have my HDD set for Use DMA if available, but WinXP has managed to kick it back to PIO mode, this is a known problem with MS apparently.

but it wont go back.

i found a temporary solution in setting my HDD to slave & booting with that. Its now in UDMA mode 5, but what if it kicks this back to PIO mode? what next ???

any ideas/experiences guys ???

I don't know, both my HDD drives share one IDE cable/channel and both run at UDMA 66. My DVD-ROM runs at UDMA 33, and the CDRW runs in PIO mode, both of which share a channel.
