I'm sure this has been asked before, but I couldn't seem to find an answer for it. I'm pretty sure my parents CPU just went out in their computer, or is on the verge of going out (get blue screen of death when fsb clock is turned up, just fine when I turn it down). I'm looking at processors and found a Athlon XP-M 2400 on NewEgg. Will this processor work in a desktop board, I have an MSI MS-6380 if thats any help.

Thanks in advance for the help

Yes it will work in desktop boards. I would check to see if your MB maker has a bios available that will properly detect a mobile cpu.

If the bios will not detect a mobile processor is there anything specific i need to set in bios as far as core voltages go. I will have the fsb set at 133 (266), but other than that I'm new to OC.

thanks

Hi ziegler and Welcome to the Forums!

The XP-m is the same as the regualr desktop with 2 exceptions (1) it has an unlocked cpu multiplier, and (2) being designed/intended for a lappie, most mobo BIOS won't recognize the chip. Thus, most mobos will assign default values for the FSB speed and multiplier.

The default FSB is usually 100mhz and the default multiplier is usually 6. This will give you a 600mhz cpu. Accordingly, you must ensure that the mobo for the XP-m offers cpu multi adjustments and FSB adjustments so you don't end up with a 600mhz cpu.

A vcore adjustment in the mobo BIOS is god as well. Although the XP-m will run fine at the desktop default voltage, it's better to run it at the proper vcore (likely 1.45v instead of the 1.65v). That way there is less power consumption and heat.

Yes it was Quite necessary.

I would keep quiet but there's quite a big difference between the 2 words.
