Hey all,
I am running an XP-M at 2.46Ghz 1.75V which is running good. I also just got a 6800 Gt and am running it OC to ultra speeds. Im wondering if my benchmarks in doom3 would improve if I upgraded to an A64 3000+ and OC it a bit. I am getting 52FPS in demo1 @ 1280x1024 with high quality and vsync enabled. im not sure if im cpu limited or what but the max I can get is 75fps if I lower the res and such... is it worth spending $300 on a new motherboard and cpu?

also, I just got a volcano 12 which works great. will this work with an A64?

In all honesty you wouldn't see much of a difference if at all. The Mobiles scale very well with clock speed...and at 2.4+ ghz they perform very well when compared to the A64's.

Now of course you can overclock the A64's as well....but it's not as guaranteed as it usually is with the mobile Bartons. I just got an A64 3200+ CG that does 2.2 ghz on default voltage, BUT it takes 1.6 volts to do 2.3 ghz and won't even do 2.4 ghz no matter what voltage I give it. I would personally stick with your Barton...as it is still very competitive.

Yes that is correct...temporary brain fart.

I agree..

Unless you can snatch up a A64 @ 2.6 or even a Prescott @ 3.6 or higher then go for it..

I am extremely happy with what this $50 1.4@2.4 coupled with a 6800GT can do..

If you are a harcore gamer yes go for it. I have had both systems and the Athlon 64 just kills the mobiles. I had an athlon 64 3200 @ 2.4 gigs and decided to sell it to try the mobile xp since so many people were raving about them (plus I wanted to save some money). Well when I got the mobile and oc it to 2.4 gigs too it sucked compared to the athlon 64. It felt soo much slower and not even close to the smoothness of the athlon 64. I decided to sell it right away and went with an Athlon 64 again. When I got back to an athlon 64 even at 2 gigs the athlon 64 felt a lot faster than the mobile ever did. Specially the min fps (almost doubled over the mobile). Funny thing is that I know if I had not tried the 64 first I would have been really happy with the mobile since it was plenty fast. With your video card the athlon 64 would simply rock. :) Also you do not need a 2.6 to feel the diference like I said a 2 gig athlon 64 gave me better fps than the mobile at 2.4. I guess it has to do with the memory controller being ondie.

While the mobile may be slower, IMO, it's best to wait for skt939 price drops/windows64/90nm w/SSE3 revision before you make your upgrade choices.

Hehheheh, for most people I would agrree. In the past 4 months I have gone from an Athlon XP 2500 oc to 3200 to a P4 2.6 at 3.3 gigs to an Athlon 64 3200 oc to 2.4 gigs to a mobile xp oc to 2.4 gigs to a mobile athlon 64 2800 oc to 2.2 to a athlon 64 3400 oc to 2.53 gigs (which I am currently selling) and I might go and try the new 35w mobile athlon 64s :) I am an upgrade wore I guess :evil::beer:

Well I did it, I bought a MSI Neo2 Nforce3 Skt 939 MB and a A62 3200+ 939 90nm chip!!! I havnt got it yet, but I am excited.. the best part is, I got the chip at chiefvalue.com on wednesday and it was priced at $191 to my suprise. everyone else had it for like $225 or so, so I orderd it. now it is priced at $266!!!! Im glad I ordered it when I did, I saved $75 bucks! chiefvalue btw is really newegg with another name; their part #s and their mail servers are neweggs so I think newegg is branching off into another name for some reason.

Definity upgrade. A64 just feel snappy due to mem controller.

But the big deal is 1.25:1 PR ratio

Meaning a 754@2500 mhz = 3125Mhz Axp!!!

Meaning a 754@2000Mhz = 2500Mhz Axp = A64 stock, is faster than what you got now overclocked.
