After booting, a dialog box pops up on my daughter's machine saying something like the logon password will expire in X days. Do you want to change it? She says she never set any passwords and I never set up any type of accounts or administration when I installed XP. No box actually comes up to enter a password but I am worried that she will soon be locked out. Any ideas? TIA

Bring up the Start | Run dialog. Enter "control userpasswords" (no quotes) in the dialog and hit the Enter key. Select the Advanced tab, and then click on the Advanced button. A Local Users and Groups dialog should come up. Select Users, then double-click on her user name in the right pane of the dialog. Put a checkmark beside "Password never expires", click the OK button, close the Local Users and Groups window, and click OK on the User Accounts dialog.

If this does not solve the problem I think you're going to have to get into a lot more detail about the system. BTW, is the Windows XP Pro or Home Edition?

It's Pro and I haven't seen the message myself. She tells me it's coming up when she boots. I'll boot it this evening and try that. Thanks.

There is no Advanced tab or Advanced button. There is an option to create a password so I assume one was never set. The box didn't come up when I booted. Maybe it's all in her head. :)

check this out.. log on as an adminstrator, i assume your logon will give you that.
start --> control panel --> administrative tools --> computer management -->
local users and groups --> users (right hand pane) --> double click on the user in question.
that will bring up a properties box. there will be an option that will allow you to set that
their password will never expire (password never expires), check that box.
see if that does it.

That's odd. The instructions I gave should have got the exact same dialog. I don't understand why no Advanced tab and Advanced button showed up -- unless it was because no passwords had been set up at all??? Hmmm. I'll have to play around a little with a test box.

That was my guess. I am still wondering why the box came up at all. It doesn't on my machine. Thanks for the help.

I'm glad you got it figure out.

BTW, I like your nickname. It evokes memories of long trips across the midwest in an Olds Ninety-Eight back in the sixties. Now THAT was a boat!
