XP locks up after splash screen--Need help please

I can't seem to start windows xp pro. It goes through the normal startup and right after the Windows XP splash screen you just get a black screen. It never even gives you the chance to logon. Could this be a possible hard disk failure or should i try to reformat?


Now it get's stuck at the screen where it says Windows XP and has the bars scrolling at the bottom too.
