I have had my computer since just after XP came out and it now appears that the RAM has failed twice in it. It's an AMD chip 1.4ghz, ASUS mobo 272ava model I do believe and I have a stick of DDR RAM in it (256MB).

When I boot up the machine it stays on for a second or two and then just dies...

Windows XP itself won't damage RAM.

You sound like you have the ASUS A7A266 board. If so, please read the FAQ: ASUS A7A266 and DDR DIMMs. That will probably solve your problem.

Thank you for the prompt reply. I am in fact on that mobo, sorry for the misinformation. I am not sure about if I have two sticks of RAM or not but will check when I go home at lunch from work.

Also, so it can run fine with the short power but then suddenly have issues?
