<< bad drive/dics. CRC is an error checking method. >>

Nope, try again... The discs work fine in every other PC, and so does the drive. (Already thought of that, and tested)

I had several problems keeping it running, turned out to be a bad drive.
Been running stable ever since. Renders a 50 MB blend file in no time flat without error.
Could never do that with 95

Well, I'm not sure if you're asking for help or if you've already made a decsion and are now merely trying to make XP the "fall guy"?????

If you are trying to slove the problem.......some info would help a lot since you haven't mentioned anything concerning your system or the hardware to my knowledge, and you don't have a "rig" page.......:( There are many variables which could be causing your problem.....to numerous to mention without some more info........:(

Not trying to make "anything" a fall guy. Just stating facts of what has happened. Face it, the OS does have some issues.

You want stats hmmm

1.4T-bird
768Megs Mushkin Cas-2 Ram
Geforce 3
MSI K7-T
Hp 24X Burner
16X/40X I/O Magic DVD/CDROM
Audigy SoundCard
MS Intellimouse Explorer
MS Keyboard
Sony 17"
Cambridge 5.1 Speakers
WD 40, and a 30 gig HDD
Antec Case

As i have Already said>>> I took the Cd and put it in 2 other PC's one running 98, one running 2K... and they work!... andddddd I took the DVD drive and also put it in the other two PC's and it worked and saw the very same disc that XP says it can't see.

They are imation CD-r's They were burnt using adaptec dircet cd. My settings are not agressive. I do not overclock nor am I pushing the memory. This was a completly fresh install. No other instabilities.

I am also now getting an error that the burner itself can't read the cd either, this is the very same burner that created this CD. Again, I removed burner placed it in my daughters PC (she runs 98se) it worked flawlessly. Go figure.

I shall check into those links thanx.

Sounds to me like you IDE channel is the problem, or maybe even the cable.

Could it be that the MOBO has a problem? Nah.....it's XP

There has been much discussion on incompatibility problems between Win XP, Nvidia and VIA over at VIA Arena. So far solutions run the gamut....but no single magic bullet has come out. VIA tech is in discussion and has offered latest beta drivers to possibly fix it, but inconclusive.

Check it out at:
http://forums.viaarena.com/messageview.cfm?catid=13&threadid=3759

Here is a quote from a VIA rep:

To update any of you new to the forums or to this issue, there have been a number of reports of people who get BSOD (blue screen of death) or a nv4_disp.dll looping error, with the system configuration of WinXP, GeForce 2 or 3 card and Nvidia 2## drivers. There are now many posts in this forum about this issue and in some threads it seems apparent that different issues are being confused with this one. The VIA Arena team in the Australian office has been able to replicate the problem on a system with KT133A mb, GeForce 2 and GeForce 3, WinXP & 21.83 Nvidia drivers. There are now also 2 separate teams in Taiwan working on this issue. Speaking candidly we're not ruling anything out at this stage but will be focusing on testing various drivers because logic dictates that this is not a hardware compatibility issue because the same hardware specs work perfectly under other Microsoft operating systems. What we do need however is your help. .....

Great another "so called PC guru"

Have I anywhere "blamed" anything? I am just reporting on what is happening.

and no, to both your "brilliant" ideas.
