Xp is F*ing me over

So I reloaded XP and everything was running great and when I turned on my computer this morning about 6 files on my desktop were missing. One of them was my music file. I can still play the music with Itunes but can no longer find the file that contains the music. I did a search and it shows it there but when I manually look for the file nothing.

Also my windows media player and outlook express both dissapeared.

It also takes quite a bit longer to load windows than before.

I am thinking that this might be a bad CPU problem. The reason I think that is when I took it out of my old board, it pulled out with the heatsink still attached. A couple of the pins were adjusted out of place but I put them back to normal and the CPU fit back into the Mobo. I'm not sure but it just feels like a CPU problem.

Any thoughts? I'm confused why the files would just dissapear. I had my quick launch toolbar up by the start bar and now that is gone is well.

If your CPU/RAM is corrupting data, it can damage the filesystem, causing files to 'disappear' or otherwise become inaccessible.

Run some stability tests with memtest86+ and Prime95. They'll tell you if your hardware is working correctly.

If you just did a fresh load of WinXP then you can be sure there wasn't a hardware problem at that time. A cpu or memory problem would never be able to finish loading XP.

It is possible that the problem developed after the fresh OS, but I would look at your hard drive first. As suggested above, memtest and Prime95 will help to diagnose.

I've heard of pins being bent, but never "adjusted out of place".

As Matthias99 said, run memtest and Prime95.

Yeah, with XP, you'll loose one file on your desktop for every CPU pin* that is "adjusted out of place".

*note that you can bend the pins back into place, but the file may not be in the same location after you do. You can keep bending the pins in different directions, then boot up to see the new location of the files.
