XP install trying to save profile folders?

I have a computer that's pretty shot. I had to by a new motherboard and such to get it to work. I tried loading the data from the old hard drive onto another machine using it as a slave but can't since the one of the profiles has been password protected. I'm looking for the simplest solution but I also wanted to ask if I could do the following:
Install XP on a new hard drive (call it 0)
Make the old hard drive with all the data (call it 1) a slave during the new install.
Once I install XP on hard drive 0 is it possible to boot into repair mode and replace the SAM and Security files in with the ones from hard drive 1?
I also thought about using MEPIS to move the files to a FAT partition which reads a lot easier but I'm not very familier with MEPIS.
Help and suggestions would be great.
Thank you.
