I've done a lot of xp installs but today I kept getting tons of set up can't copy yyy.sys or mmm.dll

It gives you two options 1) skip 2) retry

I tried it with two different windows xp cds that are spotless! It would refuse to copy those files no matter what cd.

I have a p5b deluxe, e6400, 7200.10 320GB, and just a generic dvd-rom I've never had problems with.

I have bent the ide cable more then I have for other systems (the one that came with the mobo, is that bad?)

CD media is bad.
Get a different copy of XP to install!

Or attach secondary CD-ROM to install!

New build?

Try it without any additional PCI devices installed, you can add/install them later.

This sounds like some kind of Device conflict. I had a soundcard that caused these same type of issues for me before.

Also, if you have a soundcard, make sure the onboard sound (if you have any) is disabled in BIOS - this could be another cause of your troubles.

My orig xp cd had the same problem copy avifile.dl_ and simsun.tt_, but I fixed it by using unstoppable copier to copy the XP cd to a folder on my hard-drive, and then used nlite to create bootable install iso.

BTW, if you do a lot of XP installs, nlite is definately worth looking into. You can integrate service packs, hotfixes, and drivers in addition to pre-tweaking reg settings and removing unnecessary xp features/services. It can really be a time saver, since basically you can set it up so all you have to do is boot to the cd, and it will automatically install everything without any intervention.

This is like a 50-100 files it wouldn't copy so I couldn't even finish the install and get the files manually wayy to many. I only have my graphics card for the monitor. I'll double check to make sure onboard stuff is disabled though.

I tried TWO differnt CDs I doubt it's the media. It is a new build and this DVDROM was working fine for games hours before I popped it into a new build the only thing I'm unsure of is I built the IDE cable like a hotdog and had to really shove it behind a hdd cage.. its one that came with the p5b dlx I will probably try one of the rounded cables I have around here though I don't like them very much anymore.

I will try to pull a cd-rw out of another system and try that too.

Setting up an nlite cd sounds like a worthy investment to save some time! I'll check it out.
