my friend tried to upgrade 98 to xp. but now computer is slow very slow in all aspects even booting. none of the drivers are there or anything. 80 gig hd is now 11. i don't know what he did. before upgrade he had like 9 gigs full and that's still there, everything is on the computer but not working. what's going on? lmk if you have any ideas. thanx

Were there any problems during the setup process?

Is the drive partitioned? What file system?

Any boot errors?

Does the GUI load?

What do you mean the drivers aren't there?

How old is the computer? Perhaps Windows 98 was using one of those special drivers to get around a BIOS limitation of hard disk size (older BIOSes have trouble with larger drives). Update the BIOS if you can; otherwise, you may need to invest in a PCI ATA/100 or ATA/133 IDE controller which would allow the computer to utilize the full capacity of the disk.

Older Motherboards have trouble recognising more then 35gig of a HD.

Are there any partitions on the HD?

Can he/she boot in into Windows?

Does it load at all, or are there any boot errors?

Well, sort of. It actually depends on the age of the motherboard, among other things. Some (very old) ones are limited at 512MB (or was that a DOS FAT16 limitation?), others at 8GB, others at 40GB, and yet others at 137GB.
