replaced the hard drive hoping it would help, swapped out memory sticks, etc. ran some CPU stress tests and everything seems fine.
the only time it freezes is with "1-3 minutes remain" during the install process...at the point of "removing temporary files"
tried the install with xp home sp 1 that came with the laptop and another xp home sp 2 that is my desktop OS. just cant seem to get this os put back on.
google came up with a few people asking the same question but no answers.
thanks for any help.

Who guards the guardians?
Brings back this phase. 'Boni Legati Caesarsorum'. Originally translated as "The bony legs of Caesar." (Good envoys of Caesar)

Enough of that. Lets get to the problem.

You say that it just stops when it finishing up. You done a reformat, Installed both O/S and still not installing?
Since you know computers and how they operate, it might be something we both must be missing.

Could flashing your bios help, installing chipset drivers etc.

Checking Gateway website for that model?

Interesting dilemna?

So, are you saying flashing the bios has "fixed" your problem? Or nothing works now.

If it has fixed your problem, I am wondering what the connection is between the BIOS and the F*'ed up install. My usual problems with Windows installs come with certain cd-rom drives. I specifically mean the DVD-RW drives. Hope this gets resolved!

nope. busted it up more.
got frustrated and decided to leave it for a bit. doubt i can do anything with it now, though, short of new mobo. which, honestly, could have been a problem to begin with.
in the past i had to re-apply thermal grease to the heatsink to keep it stable for any amount of hours.
had ubuntu installed and decided to switch back to windows and this happened.
