XP install failure on HP Pavillion

Trying to install Win XP on a HP Pavillion 7955. Put new HDD in a week or so ago, and OS setup preloads everything, and proceeds to run all the way through to where is detects the hard drive. Then I get where is shows the hard drive, but underneath it I get the following:

39203 MB DISK 0 AT ID 0 on BUS 0 on ATAPI.
(Setup cannot access this disk)

I press enter and then get a B.S.O.D. I can't make heads nor tails out of the information

Stop: 0x0000008E (0xc0000005, 0xF99C2CAD, 0xF95847E4, 0x00000000

This is a new HDD, not formatted...so I don't understand why I am not even given the option to format.

Any and all suggestions are MORE than welcomed by me 🙂 Please help! This is a PC I am helping a friend with because he thinks I know what I am doing! I thought it would be a simple reinstall of OS on a ew hard drive, but that's just not the case 🙁
 
I don't know how to decipher these error messages any better than you do, but here is what I would try;

HP, Compaq, Dells whatever, usually hide the BIOS information from their users that would be really helpful in this situation. You need to make sure the HD is recognized by the BIOS.

Make sure it's jumpered the same as the drive that was removed. I think I can safely assume the old HD was a single drive in the system. Now, they may have had it configured as Master, or maybe as Cable Select. You need to match that setting on the new HD.

Sometimes drives are not labeled clearly in these regards. Go to the manufacturers website and you should be able to get the information you need using the model number of the drive.

This would be my first step.
 
Okay...I just slaved it to MY computer via USB. It shows in BIOS on both my PC and the HP. When plugged into my computer, Windows found it as new hardware, but it doesn't show as a drive when I go into "My Computer" (I wanted to format it through my PC). I rebooted my system and ran the Windows XP CD on boot, and when installation finally got to where it shows the drives, it shows (along with my HDDs) but says under it "Setup cannot access this disk".

Not sure about the RAM in it. This is a "rather old" HP. I wish I had kept the old HDD, but it had sooo many bad sectors on it, that even the program "GetDataBack" was unable to recover anything, but I should have kept it and just tried a clean install. RAM is 256MB PC133, and I just reseated it into another slot...maybe that will work.
 
You never said if the jumpers are set correctly.

Download the drive manufacturers diagnostic from their website. It will create a floppy disk you can boot from to check out the drive.

No need to pre-format a disk for an XP install. The XP install routine will prompt you and do it for you. I've actually had bad results with already formatted disks for reasons I can"t explain. To make a drive you're adding to a system available in Device Manager, right click My Computer and choose Manage. Then choose Disk Management. From there you can partition anf format your drive. You can also change drive letters if desired.

You can test the Ram using memtest.

Edit: How old is this HP and what is the size of the new HD?
 
HP is 5 years old. HD is 40GB. I think it's a bad "new" drive bought from ebay. Dam't, I knew better, but STILL ordered from ebay 🙁
 
I was actually asking the size of the NEW HD because you may have BIOS limitations for HD size along with whatever other problems you are having.

You'll need to check the HP site for that information.
 
Is the new drive set as Master?
Does it show as bootable in the BIOS?
Has the old drive been removed from the PC?

Yes. Self-booting hard drive diagnostics programs contain their own OS and effectively test both the drive and the drive controller.
 
You can run the diagnostics from windows too, if you want to try it while in your system. If it gets the new drive formated and ready for a XP install, and the old system does have a bios limitation, you can just buy a used $5 PCI ATA controller card to get around it.
