XP install error

I am building a comp with my friend. We got everything put together but when installing XP Pro w/ SP2 I get the following error: "Data error:cyclic redundancy check". It says to clean the CD and try again. CD is clean and I have started it over 3 times but get the same result. So, I have 2 questions:

1) Have you seen this problem and how to fix it?
2) Is there a way to reformat the drive before it re-enters the XP set-up screen and start over w/ the HDD?

Specs: (not bad for $350)
ECS 755-A2 mobo
AMD 2800+ Skt 754
WD 80Gb 7200rpm 8mb
1x512mb Kingston ddr400 pc3200

Sorry if these are amateur ?'s, but I am one! Thanks for your help.

You get this error because the CD-Rom drive is having trouble reading the CD. Either the CD is smudged or defective, or the CD-Rom drive has a dirty lens or is defective.

If you're certain it's a good CD then I would connect another CD-Rom drive, or try a lens cleaning disc.

There is no way I know of to install XP from the HDD like you could with Win98.
