XP install difficulty with Seagate Cheetah, mup.sys

Right now I have an XP install running on my Maxtor ATA hard drive. I have two Seagate X15s that I want to use so I put em in along with an Adaptec SCSI card. I installed XP on one of the drives and the install went fine. However, when it loaded Windows it froze up while it was at the loading screen. I can get in in safe mode but not safe mode with networking. I believe it stops at mup.sys. I tried installing the Intel infs in safe mode along with the ati drivers for my 9500. Still no luck though. Why would installing on a different drive give me problems? My current install on my ATA drive went without a hitch. Any ideas on how to get the new install running?

Well always wait about 10mins before you declare the install DOA. Assuming you have done that, just hit the reset button, do not power the machine down. Wait to see if you get any farther, and repeat the process if you have to, going farther each time.

If that is not working, on your next reset when Windows prompts ou to hit f6 hit f7, this diables ACPI which could be causing conflicts. Try this before trying the first suggestion.. this is much easier.

If none of this works trying installing from DOS....

It's possible there's a cable or termination problem with the drives, SCSI is a lot more finnicky than IDE is. MUP is the Multiple UNC Provider and isn't directly related to local storage in anyway, I'm sure it was just a coincidence that was the file it stopped on.

I usually run my drives through a day of constant thrashing before putting any data on them, I want to make sure they're not going to die on me 2 days after I buy them. I personally use bonnie++ on Linux but you can probably find something that works in DOS or even your install that runs from the IDE drive. But it may be worthwhile to download a copy of Knoppix and atleast boot that up and see if it sees the drives, Windows can be annoying quiet about things that Linux will be quite verbose about.

Ive had installs confound me to death, only to realize the install CD is just dirty. I go clean the disk real good and away she goes...

Well in safe mode the computer hangs up at mup.sys. Apparently this is a problem that others have faced as well. I tried to disable mup.sys through the recovery console but it didn't work. I really have no idea what to do now. The drive is ID 1 and there is a terminator at the end of the cable.

If it's the only drive it should be id 0, I don't know if that's your problem or not though.
