If you have a 5GB Windows install, you have other issues. Most likely a large swap file, restore point(s) or even a damaged drive/partition. My entire system partition, including all currently installed apps is about 6GB filled on a 15GB partition. Again, that's everything.

Yes that does seem a little much.

I don't have a 100% accurate reference since i don't have a fresh install of XP; but my system with XP default programs install, Photoshop 7, Macromedia Dreamweaver and Flash, URU: Ages beyond Myst, Call of Duty, Americas Army : SF , Steam (CS, DOD, HL), plus all the extra utilities, small apps, documents, and image capture folder I am only using 8.48GB under a 100GB NTFS partition w/ a 768MB swap file.

I have however disabled system restore, and hibernation which frees up some space ... so those could be eating up some space; as well as like EyoreX mentioned .. your swap.

Oh yes, and I forgot ... an install of MS Office ontop of that.

Windows
system restore files
sp1 files
sp1 uninstall files
page file
hibernate file
ms office (complete install with media)

If you've got "only" this stuff it wouldnt surprise me that much if you were already upwards of 5GB, especially if you have a large amount of ram (hibernate file=total ram & page file=1.5xtotal ram so even with only 512MB of RAM you are looking at 1.25GB of space already)
