My friends pc is running windows xp home and it wont boot at all, not even into safe mode, i get a error message --forgot what the message was. Aside from reformatting for which i hope to avoid, is there a way to repair it ?

The hd is fairly new, so i dont belive the hd crashed as xp attempts to boot but then crashes after the bios and basic files load.

Thanks all.

Sometimes you can repair the xp installation by booting off the xp cd. Most of the time you end up formatting. Can you boot into last known good configuration? Get us the error message and we can help you even more.

here is the error message:

--start--
a problem has been has detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. Unmountable boot volume.

If this is the first time you seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed.

if this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates that you might need.

if problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software.

disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing.

if you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select advanced startup options, and then select safe mode.

technical information;

***STOP:0x000000ED (0x82321900, 0xC0000006, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)
--end--

this pops up right after windows xp says Starting Windows, about 20 seconds into bootup. i tried loading last known good configuration and got the same error message.

my friend did not install any new software or hardware also in the past week so he says.

any help is appreciated.
