** XP-Home vs XP-Pro....SETI question?

Does anyone know if XP-Home vs XP-pro is similar to Win98 vs Win2k? The new Dell has WinXP-Home edition....and I'm thinking of installing my XP-PRO on top of that. Any advantage?

The Dell is slowing down....probably due to only 128k memory at this point...we'll see when the other 128K arrives on Thursday.

Well, since I'm sure its built on the same engine and all, with only some advanced differences in the networking, and other small things, between home and professional, I don't think there will be a difference in WU times...

I could be wrong, but I just don't see a difference with basically, the same OS, just a few missing features in Home.

I personally prefer Windows 2000, which - on my computer anyway - runs faster than Windows XP, when both systems have 256MB of RAM available for their use. But, since that rig is pretty new, and since it's also proprietary, you might have trouble finding Win2k drivers (trust me, I tried grabbing the drivers needed to run Win2k on an HP Pavilion once, and it's a PITA). In that case, stick with Home edition unless you need some features of Pro (ability to log into a domain, better security options, etc).

And BTW, it's just totally obvious why your computer is so slow...it only has 128 K of RAM!!! :Q

You'd be much better if you bring the total to 256 M or more. Anyway, I'm really suprised that you got anything better than DOS to even boot on that. 😉

The only thing you need to know about Pro vs. Home is that:

1) All Home accounts are admin
2) Home only supports 1 CPU, Pro does 2
3) Pro has better networking features, and security features(see: gpedit. msc)
4) Pro costs more
5) MS will support Pro for 2 more years than Home under their recently annouced support policy.

Base your decision on that.

I got XP Pro, i have it running like Windows 2000 (display and everything) and i haven't had any problems at all since..

Although, if you're looking at WU times, i don't think there would be much of a difference 🙂

Engineer, you may want to see if there is any Dell software running beneath the surface that could be interrupting the client's work.

XP pro can be added to a domain. Can't do that with the home edition. I bet some of y'all actually have NT domain(s) at home like me...(freaks! :Q😀)
