Hi all,

Building a new machine and need to upgrade OS. Planning on buying XP Home OEM but remembered there's an upgrade edition as well. Can anyone verify the upgrade will work when the OS installed is a student version?

I'll likely get the Home OEM to be safe, but just wondering if anyone's had success.

Thanks,

Yes, it will work with a student edition. You don't want to get an OEM version as those are only distributed with new PCs. Yes I do recommend getting an upgrade cd.

Not sure I follow you here. OEM versions do come with new PCs, but are also available for purchase. I'm aware of the differences between OEM and retail so we don't need to get into those details.

Has anyone successfully used the XP Home Upgrade Edition (or whatever it's called) using a previous student version of Windows?

The upgrade versions accept pretty much anything, even previous OEM copies, which technically I don't think they should.

Anyways, the XP Home upgrade & oem versions are about the same cost, you'll have a ton less hassles with activation if you get the upgrade version, so go with that.

Great point re: activation. Found a good deal on Upgrade Edition @ Office Depot. There's a thread over at FW if anyone's interested. Wooo hoooo.
