This is probably a very stupid question, but here we go...
My old system runs Windows 98, which entitles me to use the Upgrade version of XP. I'm building a new system and would like to do a clean installation. I can't find anywhere that clearly states how to perform this process. Everything I've read seems to imply that an operating system must be installed prior to XP installation. How do I, if possible, install "XP Upgrade" on a computer with only an unformatted hard drive, a CD-rom, a floppy, and no O/S???
I'd appreciate any information that you folks could provide. Thank you

go here go down the middle of the page and download the home (vs the pro file) then burn it to a cdr and set bios to boot from cd note my cdrom you have to hit a key to get the hit any key to boot from cdrom message lol

then volla winxp loads magicaly lol seriously this is how i do it but i also found that just setting the bios to boot from cd on my p-4 system automaticly starts install:)

hope this helps, oh and one difference tween you and me,i am running xp pro so you might get different results as untested by me ?

If it is like the older upgrades of windows, during the initial part of the installation, it will ask to "see" the product that qualifies you for the upgrade. Of course, it is on your hard drive, it will just continue but if you have a clean hard drive, it will ask for you to insert the qualifying product. At least that is the way it worked with previous versions of windows. Then you get a nice clean install and not an overwrite of the old version of windows.

You can run a clean install off the XP disk - no problem. I have done it twice. You just have to have the Win98 CD and CD key handy at the begining.
