I have 3 windows XP machines running on my home network. I want to share my C:/ drive and allow the other computers to be able to do anything and not run into not having permission. EG open the windows directory or Program Files. Please help me.

hey titan. unless you have a domain with group settings allowing you to, you have to individually assign a share to every resorce you want shared, some folders will include sub-folders and files, but not many. XP security is mucho increaso over win9x. the shared files folder is the only one easily accessable to all users on the machine and is the easiest one to set up for a share on the network. I just put subfolder under it for any files anyother machine might need pulled off of the network.

Thanks for the help. I did it! I simply placed a shortcut to my C:/ drive into the shared folder.

Ignore my above post, I tricked myself. All the shortcut did was take me to my own harddrive.

So the origional question still stands.

Can't you just right click on the C: drive in My Computer and select 'Sharing' and enable full access (and ensure all child objects inherit the same permission). Sorry I don't have a WinXP box here at the moment so can't give specific wording.

If you have an account for each machine on the XP machine, and grant them the proper permissions, I think you should be all set. I share my XP machines with W2K, W98, and a Linux box without difficulty.

Could you please elaborate? I guess I'm just confused.

I have most of my machines setup with one of two name/password combinations, and those two accounts are in Users & Passwords of the other machines. I browse freely in any directory I choose on any of the machines, W98, W2K, or WXP. The local user has admin privileges, perhaps that's the difference.

As lobadobadingdong said, XP does not easily share the root directory. It is considered bad form to do so, security-wise.

example of what gunnarjohn has in mind: put a user titanmiller in each computer, with the same password. Require logon, and enable client for microsoft networks. Now when you log on with username and password, you are logging on to all three machines.

I'll try to figure it out, but of course I might need more help.
