I'm sitting here at a friend's house trying to get the family computers up and running. A few months back I foolishly upgraded them from 98 to XP Home. They are both basic systems with intel D815EG motherboards and celeron 1GHz cpus.

Computer 1 bit the farm two weeks back. Windows would simply stop booting. According to the MS knowledge base, it was a known issue with an XP upgrade install.

Computer 2 bugged out just last week. It would just reboot to infinity. Probably a corrupt registry, according to MS. Tried all the repair tricks on the website and none worked. So I reformatted and reinstalled. Now I have to figure out which product key goes with which computer (stupid, stupid activation).

Here I sit, being punished by bill gates and his lackeys for recommending their stupid product. I'm starting to think I should have just installed Win2k for free. :p

when the pirated software works better than the legit software... the pirated software seems more legit to me.. XP Pro works wonderfully when pirated..

my favorite key is the FCKGW key.

Well... when you put a product key in on one system, and you go to activate it.... if it tells you the product key has already been used on another system, chances are that's the key you used on the other system. You'll be given the option to put in a new key... try the other key, and it should work.

Stark, are you sure it's not your friends fault for messing up the PC's running XP? I ask this because I have tried every version of Windows and have yet to find an OS that is as stable as XP. 2K comes in a close second, but it didn't support all the games and h/w that I had. Considering that both of your friends rigs when down w/i a few weeks, asking him/her what was d/l'ed recently might help.

First of all, never upgrade an OS. Always do a clean install. Second of all, XP (when installed properly) is the best OS Microsoft has put out to date. Lastly, the guy that is using the FCKGW key on his pirated Corp XP ISO will have a nasty surprise when MS releases Service Pack 1 in September.

Tried both and still had to call M$ (supid activation).

The problem may be a defective user. I'm sure the upgrade on top of 98 didn't help, but they have a 12 year old daughter that likes to shut the computer down by turning the power strip off. The second computer (mainly her brother's everquest box) was fine until she had to start using it.

I guess it worked out for the best. They asked me how much they owed me and I said $5 for a starbucks coffee on the way home, they could tip me whatever they wanted above my $5 fee. They gave me $150. :D
