XP Home stalling early in install

Newbie builder here. Just put together my first computer with:

Abit AI7
P4 2.6C
Mushkin Level II PC3500
WD 36GB Raptor
Liteon 48x24x48x16 combo DVD/CD-R
Sapphire Radeon 9600 XT

I've gotten past POST and into the Bios to set my Onchip Serial ATA Mode to Raid. I set the boot priority to CD-Rom and rebooted with the XP home disc in it. I hit F6 and loaded the Intel Sata raid controller from the floppy. That works fine and I hit enter to continue.

The problem quickly rears its head from there. Windows setup loads a few more files and then stops in mid load. The last time it was on "(Mylex DAC960/Digital SWXcr-Ex Raid Controller)"

EDIT to add some more details: I tried booting again and skipped loading the Intel SATA drivers. Windows Setup loads a few more files than before, but still stalls out on the blue Setup screen. Could this mean some kind of memory problem?

Any ideas why it stops so soon and what I can do?

First, welcome to the boards! Is your disc scratched or dusty? Try cleaning it off. Also, do you have another CD-ROM drive you could try (although that drive you have is an awesome drive something could still be wrong with it). For the cable for your CD-ROM, is it the one that came with the motherboard? If not, change it. Is it tight in both ends? Congrats on the nice system/first build! I just built a similar system and it is blazing fast, trust me! Especially with that raptor you will be flying (I still have a regular PATA WD 7200RPM)! Happy new years!

I checked the disc and it is pristine.

The IDE cable came with the mobo, but I will inspect it and the connections again as well as try an alternate. I don't have any other CD ROM to try.

To further describe the problem, the activity light on the drive stops blinking and I can hear the drive slow down, but it does not stop completely.

You don't mention it, but I've had this SAME problem with Linux, XP and Win2k on some machines with overclocked CPUs and/or Memory. Is this machine overclocked at all? I'm a pretty hardcore overclocker... but every once in a while I hit a roadblock like this.
