I'm trying to update the drivers for my Radeon 9600 Pro from Catalyst 3.7 to the latest Omega drivers. The Omega website states that I should remove the ATI control panel before installing, so as to not create a conflict. However, when I try to remove it under the control panel, I get a popup that says "error extracting support files: access denied". Similarly, I tried to change some settings in Motherboard Monitor 5, and when I try to apply the changes, I get a popup that says "Cannot create file C:\Program Files\Motherboard Monitor 5\Data\MBM 5.ini". Then I tried to install updates for Spybot S&D, and got a popup saying "Datei C:\Program Files\Spybot Search & Destroy\updates\download.ini kann nicht erstellt werden. Access is denied." I assume this is the equivalent of the same error I'm getting with mbm 5.
I downloaded and ran the latest version of AVG Virus Scan 7.0. It didn't find anything. I then tried to install Panda Titanium Antivirus, but it gives me a popup that says "error installing ikernal.exe the specified network name is not available".
I booted into safe mode and tried to uninstall/modify the programs. Trying to uninstall ATI Control Panel gave me the same results as in normal mode. Updating Spybot gave me the same popup in German. MBM5 doesn't start up in safe mode, and when I tried to start it, I got a popup saying "the DLL attempted to create the .sys driver as a service and failed".
I tried to run Windows update and got the "please login as an admin to run windows update" message. There are instructions given to login as administrator to run windows update. I followed these, and chose an account (the only account) to run update. Nothing happens. Try again...oops, won't give me access to programs in the start menu. For whatever reason, I was still able to remove a program (Halo demo). I created another account with admin privileges, but it's doing the same thing.
What's causing this? I came to the rather stupid conclusion that Windows is not giving me full administrator privileges, based mostly on the windows update thing I mentioned above. How can I fix this? Any insight is appreciated.
